STA-AESS-RES, LLC
The RES Advantage
STA-AESS-RES, LLC (SAR) provides a new and innovative approach to the shielding and macro-encapsulation of nuclear waste material. The benefits of the RES proprietary process include:
- Decreased weight of overall shielding
|
- Decreased space required for the macro-encapsulated waste material when buried in landfills
|
- Decreased weight of the macro-encapsulated waste material making transport easier and less costly
|
- Increased containment life when compared to conventional methods
|
- Increased protection from dose, utilizing Gamma Guard™ shielding technology
|
In 2011, in concert with the Waste Management Officer of EDRF at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in SE Washington, SAR started the process of macro-encapsulation of low- to mid-level radioactive waste as well as contaminated waste. Use of high density polyurethane foam has been used previously for void fill but never sprayed externally.
It is then coupled with a polyurea coating to accomplish macro-encapsulation. In 2015 we teamed with two other companies that allowed us access to a proprietary mix of metals that when introduced into the polyurethane foam, gave us the ability to spray a product that provides shielding of 85%+ of the initial dose.
The level of protection provided to all personnel coming into contact with the item during handling, transportation and final disposition, is remarkable. When applied at the site of the waste generator the highest level of ALARA practices are achieved. Whether applying shielding foam or the standard 6.5# density polyurethane foam, the additional weight added to the sprayed piece is only between 6.5# – 8# per cubic foot of material. When compared to concrete at approximately 149# or lead at 708.58# cubic foot the advantages logistically are impressive.
It is our Mission to provide a process that utilizes an Eco Friendly, Green and sustainable product that provides the maximum shielding protection and extremely long life that will effectively deal with the remediation of radioactive and contaminated material.
